PAT CHESSELL - A Proud Canadian: A Tribute to Stompin' Tom Connors
Pat Chessell, a celebrated Canadian folk musician and 2022 Canadian Folk Music Award nominee for Traditional Singer of the Year, is proud to present a stirring tribute to the legendary Stompin’ Tom Connors. This show will celebrate the life and music of one of Canada’s greatest troubadours, offering audiences a chance to sing along to timeless classics such as The Hockey Song, Bud the Spud, Sudbury Saturday Night, and Margo’s Cargo.
More than just a nostalgic celebration, this tribute is a rallying call—bringing communities together at a time when they need it most. Stompin’ Tom’s songs capture the heart and soul of Canada, reflecting the struggles, triumphs, and everyday stories of its people. This show is an opportunity for audiences to rediscover that sense of pride and solidarity.
In a country that loves its Celtic music, it’s no surprise that Vancouver’s Pat Chessell has become known as one of the most exciting roots artists in Western Canada. Pat’s rootsy vocal style, charismatic stage presence and expert musicianship (guitar) are making for an ever-growing audience of enthusiastic fans. While his mostly original music falls solidly under the broad umbrella of ‘Celtic’, Pat’s range is prodigious and eclectic. It’s been variously described as straight-ahead “folk”, “upbeat Celtic influenced Canadian folk/pop”, and “moving mid-and-up-tempo contemporary Celtic”, among other labels. His tunes have also, on occasion, known to be tinged with Americana influences.
Pat was born into a Canadian family, British Columbia-based, with roots in Ireland and Canada’s East Coast. A lover of Celtic traditions since childhood, he’s been playing for as long as he can remember and performing in public since his early teens. After years of working hard and paying his dues, and getting really good at what he does, he’s lauded as the hardest working musician on the local music scene. Pat Chessell has carved a richly unique sound and presence that’s organic, authentic and entirely engaging. He’s developed a singular guitar style that is the result of talent, diligence, and practice – and his vocals convey a truth and passion that is turning heads in the Celtic and folk music worlds and beyond.
DANIEL LAPP
Daniel Lapp was born and raised in the Cariboo into a musical family with prairie roots. He learned fiddle music from his farming grandfather and five uncles and grew up playing gigs with his mother on piano. He was also mentored by a legion of Prince George prairie fiddling transplants who had moved to the booming logging town during the 1950’s and who formed the BC Old-Time Fiddle Association in 1969. To this day, there are branches throughout the province holding weekly fiddle jams, monthly dances and annual contests and jamborees. It was through these mentors that Daniel first started collecting original BC tunes after a trip to the UK with Spirit of the West inspired him to look closer to home for repertoire.
Now, 36 years into collecting and archiving Daniel has 3000 tunes by 300 composers with tunes dating back to the mid 1800’s. For this work and his work as a teacher Daniel has received numerous awards including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, a lifetime achievement award from the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Association, the Innovator Award from the Canadian Folk Music Association and most recently, an invitation to receive an Honorary Doctor of Music from the University of Victoria. Daniel’s newest project is Woodbox Records, a label dedicated to the preservation and promotion of BC fiddle music. His first fiddle album in 22 years will be released in May 2025 (with Quinn Bachand on guitar). The first Woodbox album was released in March 2025 featuring the current BC Fiddle Champion, 13 year old Max Francis. Daniel is the current Artistic Director of the School of Contemporary Music at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.
Max Francis will be playing with Daniel at the Rogue’s 38th birthday party on May 10 along with cellist extraordinaire, Tia Greenwood. Grade 12 student Tia has just won a full tuition scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston and will begin in September. Both Max and Tia have been part of Daniel’s youth BC Fiddle Orchestra for the past 5 years and are very active performers in Victoria and beyond. As well as being the current BC Champion (and was the youngest to ever win this honour when he was 11 yrs old) Max has won fiddle contests in Weiser, Idaho, the Bob Wills Fiddle Contest in Texas and has placed in the top 10 of the invitation only Canadian Grand Masters for the past 3 years. As a classical violinist, Max has been invited to the National Festival in the spring of 2025, also as a composer. Max’s first album of all original fiddle tunes, entitled ‘Home’ was released on Woodbox Records this past spring and is available on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms. Tia’s first album is set to be released on Woodbox Records in the spring of 2026. Both musicians have composed well over 100 compositions.
